December 2025 Social Security Payments: What Beneficiaries Should Know

As December arrives, millions of Americans who rely on Social Security and related benefits are paying close attention to when their December 2025 payments will hit their bank accounts. The schedule this year follows the normal framework set by the SSA — but December also comes with a few special quirks worth noting.

First and foremost: for those receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), the regular December benefit will be deposited on Monday, December 1, 2025For recipients of standard Social Security retirement, disability, survivor, or spousal benefits, the payment dates in December are based on the beneficiary’s birth date. The distribution will follow the usual Wednesday schedule as set by the SSA:

  • Beneficiaries born between the 1st and 10th of any month will receive their check on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.
  • Those born between the 11th and 20th will be paid on Wednesday, December 17, 2025.
  • And people whose birthdays fall between the 21st and 31st will get theirs on Wednesday, December 24, 2025.

There are also some special cases: individuals who began receiving benefits before May 1997 — or who receive both SSI and regular Social Security benefits — will be paid earlier, on Wednesday, December 3, 2025.

But December 2025 brings a rare twist: because January 1, 2026 is a federal holiday, the SSI payment that would normally come in January gets moved up — and will be deposited on Wednesday, December 31, 2025.

What this means in practice is that some beneficiaries may receive two separate SSI payments in December — one for December and one early for January — giving their bank account a temporary boost before the new year.

It is important to note that the December payments are for benefits earned through November. The early January payment (arriving December 31) will reflect the benefit rate with the upcoming cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) that becomes effective in January 2026.

For many recipients, this schedule — especially the extra December 31 deposit — can help with holiday planning, bills, and budgeting. However, it can also cause confusion, especially for anyone who might expect a January check as usual. Because the early payment practically serves as January’s benefit, there will be no separate SSI payment in January 2026 for those affected.

If you’re eligible for benefits, this is a good time to check your bank account around those dates, and — if needed — inform anyone dependent on these funds (family, caregivers, etc.) about the timing shift.

In short: December 2025 offers a standard benefit schedule plus a calendar-driven bonus for some — but it’s essential to understand which payment applies to which month so you’re prepared for January and beyond.
